Aural Transferences
This is an ongoing project that is focused on sound visualisation from the Deaf artist Chelle's perspective and from her memory and time, from when she was 3 - 4 years old with 10% hearing before that 10% was lost when she was around 8-9 years old. The sounds that she heard before losing that 10% were retained in her memory and from that memory over the years, she has listened to sounds and music through feel and with a cochlear implant, creating more sound memories. These memories of sound have evolved into what she hears today, sounds from her immediate environment, whether that is people talking, the TV, birds, or musicals and concerts. She uses colour and charcoal to imprint these sounds as visual representations using drawing methods and performance and textile poetry. Chelle has been using her sound memories while travelling locally, nationally and internationally to capture visuals of sounds. Some sounds, she says are in different contexts of cultural and linguistic as she noted their differences to the usual sounds she may hear in her local environments and this is what intrigues Chelle and she loves that she can absorb herself in new sounds and music.
